What are Cold Insulation Materials?

Generally, cold insulation materials are materials specifically designed to prevent heat transfer to surfaces or spaces that need to be kept cold. Essentially, they insulate cold objects or areas to maintain low temperatures, improve energy efficiency, and protect from condensation, frost, and thermal loss.

These materials are widely used in refrigeration, cold storage, air conditioning, pipelines, and industrial cryogenic systems.

Cold insulation materials own different types, but in Zhenshen, we mainly have the following:

  • Rigid Glass Materials: Cellular Glass / Foam Glass

  • Fiber-based: Fiberglass Insulation

  • Rigid Foam Plastics: PIR Insulation, PUR Insulation, PUF Insulation(Polyurethane Foam)

  • Advanced Insulation Materials: Aerogel Felt

  • Flexible Blanket Materials: Resilient Blanket

Additionally, although the composition and form of these cold insulation materials are different, their commonalities in cold insulation applications are very obvious. In summary, they can be summarized into the following aspects:

In terms of product performance, they have low thermal conductivitylow-temperature stabilitymoisture resistancechemical stability and fire safety.

The most fundamental commonality among cold insulation materials is their ability to effectively prevent heat transfer from the external environment into low-temperature settings, thereby maintaining the cold temperature within cold storage facilities, pipelines, or tanks. Simultaneously, cold surfaces readily absorb moisture, leading to condensation, frost formation, or corrosion. Consequently, most cold insulation materials are engineered with closed-cell structures or water-repellent surfaces to prevent moisture infiltration. In cryogenic conditions, they resist cracking, chalking, or performance degradation, maintaining structural integrity and thermal insulation effectiveness from -50°C to -200°C (or even liquid nitrogen temperatures). Furthermore, most materials exhibit corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, extended service life, and excellent safety profiles.

From an application perspective, they easy to install and versatile.

Pipes, cold storage facilities, or storage tanks often require large areas of insulation material. Using lightweight materials not only reduces structural load but also facilitates installation. Cold insulation materials can adapt to various shapes and environmental demands, applied in multiple forms such as panels, blankets, sprayed coatings, or pipe shells.
